For many students, writer’s block can be a common occurrence when putting together an essay for class or completing a writing assignment. Here are three ways to overcome writer’s block and get back on track with your writing.

Get Some Fresh Air

One of the best ways to overcome writing challenges is by changing your environment. Sometimes something as simple as a walk around the block, getting some coffee, or taking your dog to the park can help you get unstuck. If possible, take a notebook with you so that you can write down any ideas you have on your walk.

Try Freewriting

Once you’re a bit more relaxed, you can try tracking your assignment again. A technique that can get your creativity flowing is freewriting. Freewriting consists of writing without worrying about grammar or structure and aims to make you feel less pressured. Once you do a bit of freewriting you can take a moment to edit and structure your ideas into something you can turn in.

Use the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro technique is a concentration technique that allows you to do writing sprints followed by a short break. Once you’re ready to start writing, set a 25-minute timer and focus for that time; once it’s over, rest for 5 minutes. Every five Pomodoros, make sure to take a 15 - 25 minute break to recharge.
